IDEAL OFFSHORE conditions and an excellent 1.5m ( 3 to 4 feet) swell saw the Rusty Gromfest 2011 called on today with rounds 1 and 2 of 16 Boys and round 1 of the 14 Boys to be completed. Perfect offshore winds all day along with incoming tides should see huge scores and futuristic surfing performances from these elite young surfers from all over Australia along with a strong international contingent. There'll be outstanding young surfers competing all day and some of the surfers certain to attract the attention of the many industry talent scouts who attend this event to look for tomorrows emerging stars include Eli Steele (Sunshine Coast), Jakson Baker (Newcastle), Kalani Ball (Sth Coast NSW), Shaun Manners (WA) and Joe Van Dijk (Phillip Island) - to name just a few! One that will attract huge attention is Italian youngster Leonardo Fioravanti who has a huge profile in Europe as an emerging youngster. The Italian will surf around 3pm in the final heat of the 14 Boy's round one. Today's huge program will conclude with the semi finals of the popular Kerrazy AirShow - where 12 of the best young aerialists compete and will be scored only on their aerial moves - The Kerrazy AirShow is named after Rusty's superb ASP World Tour surfer Josh Kerr who is widely regarded as the world's best aerial surfer. After today's Rusty Gromfest day 1, the event will have two days to run to completion and under the expert guidance of contest director Max Perrot, will choose the best two days between Sunday and Tuesday to run through to the finish!

8th July, lay day has been called for the first day of the Gromfest event, small waves today but the swell should comp up late this arvo, could be game on tomorrow!

Gromfest 2011 all set to go!

Many of the best 16 and under surfers in the world look set to enjoy great waves at this week's 16th annual Rusty Gromfest. With a powerful southerly swell moving up the coast and clean offshore classic winter conditions along the surf rich region of NSW’s far north coast, the Lennox Head region should be firing right through the contest window period which begins this Friday and can potentially extend right through to Tuesday.


The field includes Australia’s very best boy and girl grom’s (16 year's and under) along with a number of outstanding international youngsters who will test their skills at what is a world renowned annual gathering. All youngsters chase the Rusty Gromfest title because this the original and best and boasts an honour roll of winners like no other event! Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons, Mick Fanning and  Julian Wilson are a small sample of Rusty Gromfest champions and those who win a division in the coming week will be joining an esteemed group and may well be on a pathway to a successful professional career. Just a few of the obvious surfers to watch include Eli Steele (Qld), Kanoa Igarashi (USA), Massin O’Neill (Tahiti), Leonardo Fioravanti (Italy), Michael Wright (Lennox Head), Kirstin Ogden (Byron Bay) and Karelle Poppke (Tahiti) but the reality is that unknown youngsters emerge at the Rusty and it’s exciting to see these new talents appear.


The Rusty Gromfest will begin first thing Friday morning when competitors and official meet at Lennox Head beach. Last years Kerrazy Airshow was an exciting new initiative included in the Rusty and it’s on again with these super talented youngsters displaying futuristic aerial moves. Anticipation for an epic event is high!
