AS FAR AS I COULD GET

These photographs were made by pushing the self-timer button on my camera and running as fast as I could away from the camera. An exposure is made in 10 seconds. A selection of these prints was shown only once at the Hammer / UCLA Museum, Los Angeles, as part of the COLA exhibition in 2000. "The Green of this Notebook" was also exhibited - John Divola

BETTER THAN SOMETHING

BETTER THAN SOMETHING is a feature documentary about the controversial and prolific garage rock icon Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr, better known to the world as Jay Reatard. This intimate portrait, captured just months before his untimely passing, brings us incredibly close to Jay's complicated punk-rock world in Memphis, Tennessee. BETTER THAN SOMETHING eloquently interweaves cinéma vérité, interviews, and archival concert performances, and features scenes from an insightful and candid week spent with Jay, who reveals personal childhood stories and the struggles of life in Memphis.

NEON BOYS

The Neon Boys were formed after Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine dropped out of school and wound up in New York in the early 1970s. Here they found drummer Billy Ficca and recorded a self titled single in 1973, which has been described as the ‘first punk rock single’ (preceeding the more popular choice of The Damned’s ‘New Rose’ by three years).

The Neon Boys never played live due to the absence of a second guitar player. When they found one, Richard Lloyd, they changed their name to Television and morphed into an Art-Rock band. This original line-up lasted until 1975 when Hell left to join the Heartbreakers with Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan.
Two Neon Boys songs can be found on the Richard Hell compilation ‘Spurts’.

KIM GORDON

Kim Gordon returns to the world of women's apparel this month, with a new collection she's designed for the French brand Surface to Air, as the New York Times' T Style blog reports. The 12-piece collection will be available at select retailers across the globe as well as Surface to Air's shops in New York, Paris, and São Paulo.

Like her 2009 Mirror/Dash collection for Urban Outfitters, Gordon went for a streamlined, cool-mom aesthetic with a Francophile bent. It features T-shirts with her own drawings as well as cropped neon-tangerine pants, a soft leather jacket, and Kim's personal favorite, "a silk tank dress with a digital shattered-glass print" that is "open with slits down the sides." It also includes black, brown, and snakeskin boots.

Speaking with the Times, Gordon said, "I'm a mom, but I don't always want to look just like that," and emphasized "the idea of finding things that work and are comfortable, but in which you can still feel like you have an identity."

Gordon also designed clothes for her X-Girl line in the 1990s; check out a short clip from its launch show here.

FRUITS & NUTS

Fruits and Nuts is a handmade board book by Laura Owens that takes its title from a play on the joke about California being full of fruits and nuts. The pages of each book are hand-glued with actual newsprint from different Californian 1960s newspapers such as the San Francisco Chronicle, Berkeley Barb, and Los Angeles Times, and then silkscreened, making each book truly unique. Inside pages are screenprinted with an illustrated alphabet of fruits and nuts. Covers are hand-painted by the artist, and vary in color. Each copy is entirely handmade and features different original newsprint on each page. Hardcover, hand-bound, with 20 screen-printed images in 6 colors on 22 pages. Edition of 100 with 15 AP’s, 2011.
