We need much stronger fuel encoomy standards. The plug in hybrids will be capable of over 100 mpg when used in a typical commute mode. EVs, which are already available use no gas what so ever. There needs to be strong incentive programs to get these cars in use quickly and in large volumes. How much do we spend in buying, protecting and fighting wars over oil? Probably in the $trillions. For a paltry $20billion, we could get a million EVs, plugins and plugin conversions on the road in a few years, by offering $20,000 incentives. this will get us to where the cost per vehicle is reasonable.Dan SyroidEngineer and EV advocate
